MICHIGAN PROCLAMATION

Governor John Engler October 20, 2000 as WELCOME HOME DAY WHEREAS, throughout our nation's history, servicemen and women of the United States armed forces have faithfully defended the principles of freedom and representative government, and have worked for the advancement of human rights and democratic ideals in our state, nation, and around the world; and WHEREAS, the citizens of Michigan have a tremendous amount of pride in our Vietnam veterans and military personnel for courageously representing our country; and WHEREAS, October 20, 2000, has been set aside as a day to pay tribute to and welcome home our sons and daughters who have contributed to the security of the United States through honorable military service in Vietnam; and WHEREAS, we must never forget the debt we owe these men and women who have loyally served our nation in battle, we must never take for granted their contributions and sacrifices, and we must remember with honor those who have so unselfishly put themselves in harm's way so that we may live in peace; NOW, THEREFORE, I, John Engler, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby issue this special tribute in recognition of October 20, 2000, as WELCOME HOME DAY in Michigan, and I urge all citizens of our Great Lakes State to acknowledge the courage, sacrifice, honor, and positive achievements of our nation's Vietnam veterans and their families.
