RHODE ISLAND PROCLAMATION

State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations GUBERNATORIAL PROCLAMATION Whereas, on this, the 25 th Anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War, we honor those veterans who gave their full measure of devotion to the cause of liberty, justice and freedom; and,Whereas, over 300,000 men were wounded. 75,000 severely disabled, and of the 58,000 killed, 207 were from the State of Rhode Island; and, Whereas, the Welcome Home Day Foundation, founded by a non-veteran, is a non-profit public benefit and educational foundation. Their mission is to educate the general public as to the untrue stereotypes of the Vietnam veteran, correct these stereotypes, and have a one-time national event where we as a nation finally welcome them home; and, Whereas, during the month of October 2000, the Welcome Home Day Foundation wants to remind the people of the State of Rhode Island and the country as to the struggles, grief, pain and sacrifices these veterans and their families made in the respect of the ideals which made this country great; and, Whereas, the people of the State of Rhode Island, in conjunction with the Welcome Home Day Foundation, acknowledge the courage, sacrifice, honor and positive achievements of our nation's Vietnam veterans and their families, and firmly represent that we proudly welcome them home; NOW, THEREFORE, 1, LINCOLN ALMOND, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND AND PROVIDENCE PLANTATIONS, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM, October 2000as Vietnam Veterans Appreciation Month in the State of Rhode Island and encourage all of its citizens to join me in recognizing this very important month. In recognition whereof I have hereby set my hand and caused the Seal of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations to be hereunto affixed this month of October 2000.
