WHEREAS,
members
of
the
Armed
Forces
of
the
United
States
stationed
in
Southeast
Asia
during
the
Vietnam
War
served
our
nation
under
the
most
trying
conditions
at
a
time
when
the
nation
was
divided
in
its
support;
and
WHEREAS,
more
than
58,
000
Americans
gave
their
lives
for
the
cause
of
freedom
in
Vietnam-
Of
these
58,000,
more
than
600
were
from
Colorado;
and
WHEREAS,
Since
their
return,
these
veterans
have
made
tremendous
contributions
to
their
communities,
states
and
nation
in
an
effort
to
advance
the
American
ideals
and
goals
for
which
they
fought;
and
WHEREAS,
we
as
citizens
of
the
great
State
of
Colorado
must
never
forget
the
pain
and
suffering
that
lingers
today
for
the
men
and
women
who
fought,
with
honor
and
distinction,
in
the
name
of
freedom
and
democracy
for
all;
and
WHEREAS,
October
20,
2000,
has
been
set
aside
as
a
day
to
pay
tribute
and
welcome
home
our
sons
and
daughters
who
have
contributed
to
the
security
of
the
United
States
through
honorable
military
service
in
Vietnam;
and
WHEREAS,
the
people
of
Colorado,
in
conjunction
with
the
Welcome
Home
Day
Foundation,
acknowledge
the
courage,
sacrifice,
honor
and
positive
achievements
of
our
nation's
Vietnam
veterans
and
their
families;
Now
Therefore,
I,
Bill
Owens,
Governor
of
the
State
of
Colorado,
do
hereby
proclaim
October
20,
2000,
as
WELCOME
HOME
DAY
