By His Excellency JOHN G. ROWLAND, Governor: an

WHEREAS
, the citizens of our country are proud of the men and women who have fought throughout history to defend the principles of liberty and freedom on which our nation was founded; and

WHEREAS, American citizenship guarantees each of us certain rights and privileges.  It also carries with it considerable responsibilities.  Throughout our history, Americans have willingly answered the call to defend the freedoms that we enjoy and have inspired other nations in their quest to assure freedom in their own lands; and

WHEREAS, members of our Armed Forces have brought great honor to our nation and have given true meaning to the highest standards of patriotism and service. Our servicemen and servicewomen made personal sacrifices and suffered severe disruption of their lives.  Some endured extreme conditions, terrible hardship, and unspeakable atrocities in serving our country; and

WHEREAS, our veterans reflect the best qualities of patriotism and courage in all of us, and they continue to make countless contributions in military and civilian life; and

WHEREAS, 2,086 Americans are still missing and unaccounted for from the Vietnam War, including 34 from the State of Connecticut, and their families, friends, and fellow veterans still endure uncertainty concerning their fate; and

WHEREAS, it is important to honor all of Connecticut's Veterans so that they may be given the recognition they so deserve for their sacrifices on behalf of the United States of America.  I join with the Welcome Day Foundation in their efforts in welcoming home all of America's Vietnam Veterans; now

THEREFORE, I, John G. Rowland, Governor, do hereby officially designate October 20, 2002 as

VIETNAM VETERAN’S DAY

in the State of Connecticut.  I urge all our citizens to take this opportunity to recognize and remember all these brave individuals for their service and sacrifice on behalf of our Nation.
